Finding your own Genius
The idea of Genius has great cache in our society. We all know of the prodigious genius...those gifted students to whom some special talent matures in an unusually short period of time. Then there are the other type of geniuses...those who possess such amazing common sense that they discover natural quantum shifts as easily as we mortals might determine whether it might rain any particular day. Yet a third type of genius is the genius struck out of the blue by a lightening bolt of awareness. They are the lottery winners of genius lore...simply at the right place and the right time to collect the spoils of fantastic virtuosity.
Most of us would like,if given a chance, to live up to our personal brand of genius...but how do we do this?
If you know you haven't found your genius yet, how do you go about finding it?
I'm not proposing an answer to that question yet...
I just read this description of what the MacArthur Fellows program looks for when selecting receipients for their "genius award".
The people we seek to support express many other important qualities (other than intellectual prowess): (the) ability to transcend traditional boundaries, willingness to take risks, persistence in the face of personal and conceptual obstacles, capacity to synthesize disparate ideas and approaches.
Now that's not something normally taught in school...nor are we given this advice by our parents...who naturally want us to have safe and secure lives. Yet, it is a rare enough quality to be highly valued and gifted by this prestigious organization. So how do we teach ourselves to do this on a daily basis?
Again, I'll tackle this in a future posting.
